Government announces local level elections for May 13
The government has announced local level elections for May 13 2022 in one phase as per the recommendation of the Election Commission.
According to a minister, the decision to held local level elections took at a cabinet meeting on Monday.
Previously, the ruling coalition attempted to postpone the elections by altering the electoral laws. The administration, however, had caved in to pressure from the press, opposition parties, and civil society organisations. Some members of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba’s Nepali Congress have also spoken out against the scheme.
The Election Commission proposed polling dates of April 27 and May 5. As the administration postponed the announcement, the panel proposed a new date of May 18. The administration, on the other hand, announced a date that is five days early than the proposed date.
